Our credit jobs are all listed within this sector. Credit job titles are usually "credit risk managers," "credit analysts" or "credit officers," but some banks use a seniority level followed by credit - e.g., "vice president, credit." No matter the title, throughout the course of a credit career, these professionals review credit applications from the bank's clients (usually companies that wish to borrow money) or from other financial institutions who are the firm's counterparties.
Jobs listed here also include credit risk. This is the risk of loss of principal funds if a borrower defaults on loan repayment. Risk is incurred when a person or company plans to use future income to pay a current debt. Credit risk analysts and professionals aim to minimize risk by creating credit proposals and reviews, which supply businesses with impartial assessments on the financial situation of potential and current borrowers.
Credit analysts work with the lending team to make sure that credit proposals or extensions are approved or declined in compliance with the firm's own credit policies alongside local regulations. Most lenders use internal models, called credit scorecards, to judge potential and existing customers according to risk. Various different components such as operating experience, management expertise, asset quality and leverage and liquidity ratios are considered when composing these models.
The goal of a credit professional is to maintain high credit quality through the careful structuring, sanctioning, monitoring and control of credit applications in accordance with credit standards. Credit analysts are also required to keep track of clients whose credit portfolios require careful checking. That way, any deterioration in credit will be quickly detected and the overall risk lowered.
Credit professionals, particularly ones that stand higher within the business, must work closely with the business and understand their overall portfolio and risk capabilities. They should keep current on financial analysis and risk profiles of assigned sectors, borrowers and counterparties throughout credit careers. They must handle the difficulty of balancing the goals of sales staff to expand the business with their own responsibilities to lend carefully and make financially sound credit decisions.
Different types of transactions carry different credit risk issues, including within corporate banking, project finance, structured trade and syndications. Many other firms besides banks recruit credit professionals as well. For instance, private equity firms hire them to manage the credit risk of counterparties and investment-related service providers.
Credit jobs can be very specific. Some positions may work only on counterparty risk. These involve due diligence visits to financial institutions to gather credit information. They then analyze these financial records with excel spreadsheets, providing the bank with a current, realistic estimation of future operating performance.
