Our client is one of the largest and most active small and micro cap direct investment funds and has been generating a successful track record of investment returns since 1999. Their flagship fund has been ranked by BarclayHedge as one of the top 10 performers for both one and three year periods among those specializing in the Private Investment in Public Equity PIPE) strategy. The firm has an affiliate which manages approximately $5 billion in structured finance investments. Most recently, the firm launched an energy-focused commodities hedge fund managed by a veteran commodities trader and former board member of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Total hedge fund assets are close to $800 million and the near term goal is to increase assets under management to the $2-$3 billion level via expansion of existing funds and the launch of additional hedge fund strategies.
THE POSITION
Location: New York
Reporting Relationships: The head of Sales and Marketing will report to the Managing Partner of the firm.
Responsibilities:
The focus of this position is to steadily build the firm’s asset base, primarily through institutional investors. The successful candidate will be held accountable for the following:
• Develop new leads and maintain a disciplined and proactive sales process that will promptly lead to new asset in-flows for the firm;
• Aggressively follow up on in-house leads and existing relationships and orchestrate the closing process on such business;
• Work closely with portfolio managers and the senior management of the firm to maximize coverage of potential clients and enhance relationships with alternative investment consultants;
• Take a lead role in growing the firm’s hedge fund assets to several billion dollars;
• Travel extensively, as required, to significantly expand and deepen the firm’s relationships with institutional investors, with the goal of dramatically increasing participation in final presentations;
• Assist in the development and launch of new investment funds;
• Develop an institutional quality client service function and enhance the firm’s marketing materials and industry profile.
Professional Qualifications:
The ideal candidate would be a sales & marketing professional with at least 7-10 years experience in the institutional investor marketplace, including past success in selling hedge fund products. Specific attributes and qualifications should include:
• Strong relationships with investors such as public funds, foundations and endowments, corporate plan sponsors, family offices and hedge fund of funds;
• A demonstrated track record in consistently gathering substantial assets from a broad range of institutional investors;
• Extensive knowledge of the universe of active hedge fund investors and a clear understanding of how to interface with those pension fund consultants who assess alternative investment strategies;
• Strong communication, writing and presentation skills;
• A cooperative team player attitude and an ability to work effectively in a small company environment;
• An ability to travel extensively;
• The highest ethical standards
Education/Certifications:
The candidate must be a college graduate. An advanced degree such as an MBA, CFA or equivalent is preferred.
