Role Overview
The EBRD's Office of the General Counsel is at the core of EBRD's challenging mandate to support the transition process in the 29 Emerging Markets of Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It handles all legal aspects of the EBRD's lending and investment transactions, all legal aspects of the EBRD's finance operations, provides legal advice for institutional, environmental, co-financing and administrative matters, and implements a legal technical assistance programme to support the legal transaction process in the region.
This role relates to a future position with an anticipated start date of early next year.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
To work and provide legal advice on a wide range of institutional, environmental, co-financing and administrative matters, including:
  • Matters concerning the EBRD's membership, Board of Governors and Board of Directors, including documentation and procedural issues relating to the EBRD's Annual Meetings;
  • Privileges and immunities of the EBRD and its personnel in member countries;
  • The application of the Environmental and Social Policy to banking operations and advising on other environmental initiatives of the EBRD;
  • Matters relating to the EBRD's official co-financing activities, including the management and administration of multidonor funds, and international and regional initiatives to cooperate in promoting transition and development;
  • Administrative matters including, in particular, those affecting the headquarters building in London and resident office premises in the EBRD's countries of operations; and
  • Contracts for the supply of goods and services to the EBRD.


Essential Experience and Qualifications
  • Law degree from a leading university in own home country and a post graduate degree from a leading university or professional experience in another country, a graduate degree in public international law would be favourably considered.
  • Be admitted to practice law in at least one jurisdiction and have academic qualifications or professional experience in both civil and common law.
  • Have at least five years of professional experience in some or all of the matters listed above, and at least one year work experience in an international financial institution or other international organisation.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in public international law and the workings of international organisations.
  • Be particularly interested in Emerging Markets work.
  • Have an excellent command of the English language, including a demonstrated skill to draft and negotiate legal documents in English.
  • A command of Russian, or another language of EBRD's region, including a demonstrated skill to draft and negotiate in such language, would be a significant advantage, but is not a requirement.
