Responsibilities

• Working with various Geneva-based businesses along with other Geneva Law Department and worldwide lawyers,
• Developing a working partnership with the business units he/she serves by understanding the business unit vision and metrics, the key customers and suppliers as well as by proactively addressing issues faced and opportunities presented to the businesses. It will require regular and direct business contact with all levels of the businesses,
• Responding to day-to-day issues as well as handling all ensuing arbitration or litigation including managing outside counsel, often in London,
• Advising the business unit on strategic and long-term matters, including key supplier/customer relationships and risk management. This activity implies that the lawyer brings into the transaction other appropriate functions and resources such as tax, treasury, or insurance, and other resources in the Worldwide Law Department such as M&A, food law, or employment law expertise.

Role

• The candidate will have the requisite knowledge and expertise and act in accordance with the Code of Ethics. As such, her/she is responsive, proactive in gathering facts and understanding the situation, an effective communicator, a creative facilitator in assisting clients, a risk manager and an efficient manager of outside counsel,
• The candidate will be an active participant in the Company’s global legal team and cooperate with colleagues,
• The candidate will develop a relationship of trust and collaboration with his/her client(s), as well as a thorough understanding of the client's business, strategy and plans. This will be done in a common sense manner that takes into account the nature and scope of each client, the amount of legal work it generates and the legal risks it faces.

Requirements

• 3 to 7 years experience as a qualified solicitor or lawyer (preferably UK), ideally in the field of trading and/or transportation. If qualification/admission is not UK, a comparable experience with English law and the English legal system is a must,
• Experience of shipping and trading law,
• Proven ability to face new and diverse challenges combined with passion for learning and growth,
• Fluency in English required; strong reading and oral skills in at least one other language an asset,
• Some travel required; generally within Western & Eastern Europe but occasionally to other locations,
• Very good team spirit coupled with excellent communication and negotiation skills,
• Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and other accepted office applications.
