We are presently recruiting for an Analyst in the Funds and Secondaries department. Reporting to the Vice President – Head of Funds & Secondaries, the Analyst plays a key role in making and managing private equity fund investments around the world.

CPP Investment Board is one of the largest and fastest growing institutional investors in the world.  Headquartered in Toronto, with offices in London and Hong Kong, the CPP Investment Board is governed and managed independently of the Canada Pension Plan by experienced and highly skilled investment professionals. Their job is to prudently invest CPP assets to help pay future pensions.

We are presently recruiting for an Analyst in the Funds and Secondaries department. Reporting to the Vice President – Head of Funds & Secondaries, the Analyst plays a key role in making and managing private equity fund investments around the world. The Analyst assists Associates, Principals and Senior Principals in evaluating potential private equity fund managers, conducting research, developing investment recommendations, participating in the negotiation and execution of fund commitments and secondary purchases, and monitoring and managing investments.

Role Specific Accountabilities:

A) Analyze Investment Opportunities:

i) Review:

• Research, analyze and evaluate private equity fund managers and secondary opportunities, including assisting in the overall evaluation process

• Build complex dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities (including testing assumptions and sensitivities)

• Perform due diligence on private equity funds managers (including past investment performance, quality of investment teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, etc.), and on companies within secondary portfolios to evaluate performance, valuation and exit opportunities

• Compile and analyze track record information for managers

• Assist in the maintenance of a private equity fundraising forward calendar

• Perform valuation analysis of underlying companies to determine optimal pricing of funds in the secondary market

• Meet with fund management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, industry issues, and other relevant topics as required

• Conduct reference calls with portfolio company management, Limited Partners and others

• Apply “Total Portfolio Approach” as it applies to fund commitments and secondary investments, including PME and analysis

ii) Recommend:

• Attend and participate in Funds & Secondaries investment recommendation meetings

• Assist in presenting Manager Recommendations to the Private Investments department and the Investment Department Decision Committee

B) Execute Fund Commitments and Secondaries:

• Assist with the overall execution of fund commitments and secondaries

• Liaise with investment partners (other Limited Partners) and advisors (financial, legal, etc.)

C) Monitor Private Equity Funds:

• Coordinate with CPPIB Finance & Operations group with respect to monitoring ongoing investments and verifying accuracy of cash inflows/outflows

• Monitor ongoing financial performance of funds and portfolio companies

• Assist in performing valuation reviews of funds

• Attend annual meetings as required

• Assist in building and leveraging relationships with Limited Partners and others

D) Build the Team:

• Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings

• Share knowledge by coordinating and entering information into TNR for both existing and prospective investments

• Assist in recruiting activities including liaising with universities, networking, sourcing candidates and interviewing prospective hires, as required

• Attend and participate in Private Investments recommendation meetings

• Other relevant duties and projects as assigned

If you possess the following, we’d like to hear from you:

• 0 - 3 years experience in investment banking, private equity or other relevant areas

• Undergraduate degree, preferably in commerce or business administration

• CFA, CBV or CA designation is considered an asset

• Strong research, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills 

• Professionalism and integrity

• Strong interpersonal skills and business relationship skills

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

• Flexibility, adaptability and initiative

• Good judgement

• Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure

• Team player who enjoys a high performance culture

• Willingness to travel
